>> major development in high profile san francisco murder case. second suspect in the 2008 killing of father and 2 sons was captured in north carolina north of charlotte. police say reyes killed 3 members of the pwloen family in the case of mistaken identity and gang violence. nick smith is here. nick they wanted him for a listening time. >> san francisco police have had an open warrant for reyes known gang member for more than 4 years. today they caught their man. 31-year-old alfredo

reyes is accused of killing 3 members of the family in the case of gang violence and myself taken identity. earlier today reyes and another ms 13 gang member 25-year-old jose if captured and arrested at this home in north carolina. neighbors were shocked. >> we didn't know anything about it. they showed up. they showed up one day moved i in. him if it's completely insane. >>reporter: police say reyes attempted to jump from a wonder o. but was stopped by hadestigators have had a 5 million dollar warrant out for ray necessary connection with the murders for more than 4 years. jury has already convicted ramos for the murder of 48-year-old anthony and his sons michael and matthew. but they still wanted reyes. >> any time there's a brutal murder like that, the investigators are not going to give up. they are going to work every lead they can get. >>reporter: reyes sentenced last month to 3 consecutive

life term for the murder. he said from the start he was not the shooter. he told news the jail house interview he was shocked when reyes pulled out the gun. >> that wasn't part of it. i didn't tell him ya go ahead or ya like i'm going to help you. just something happened in the moment. without me knowing knowing it without me expecting i it. >>reporter: the jury hung on the count that accused him of tiring into occupied vehicle. >> gives him some credibility first of all that he wasn't alone in the car as prosecution theory was since he didn't see anyone else in the vehicle. >>reporter: the family learned of the arrest this morning. i spoke with the family spokesperson today. >> they are just very focused and determined to get justice for tony michael and matthew. so they do what have they have to do. >>reporter: surviving son andrew who testified at the trial his sister and his mother have been in a witness protection program in part because reyes still at large.

been a very warm year so far. now we have official word on just how hot it has been. government forecasters say the first half of this year has been the hottest six months in u.s. history. more than 24,000 heat records have already been shattered this year. 170 all-time record highs were broken or tied in the month of june alone. whew. those numbers say it all don't they? and a big chunk of the country is finally getting a break from all the heat. southern california getting a nice taste of it. people were struggling to cool off as temperatures in the valleys and deserts soared into the triple digits. excessive heat warnings remain in effect for most of today. but there was some relief along the coast. in central virginia, some residents haven't had power in ten days. so they have been cooling off in prison. yes, the old jailhouse in amherst county serving as an emergency shelter since storms hit the area last month.
